These are Oaxacan animals my 4th graders made using a wire, newspaper and masking tape armature. They covered the armature with plaster wrap. This took 4-5 lessons and not many students got to the point of adding characteristic Oaxacan designs. I now do this lesson with 5th graders and use air dry clay. It is quicker, but the air dry clay has some construction drawbacks. They are easily broken if mishandled, if thin areas are used, or if parts are not properly joined. I have started letting students use google eyes and they are wonderful. Almost any blob takes on a unique personality with google eyes!
